It is also a general practice to enhance gems, particularly colored varieties, using particle physics treatment techniques and high heat. This is carried out in a specialist unit and is perfectly safe for the wearer of any treated gems. This boosts the color saturation of gems quite substantially.
In general the deep richest colors will provide the most value in the gemstone. The optimum shade for amethysts might be a deep, regal purple. A pale lilac or lavender shade amethyst will not be as costly.
People, being individuals, tend to prefer a wide variation in color and will quite often choose a very light gem above its more expensive stronger colored version. This has the advantage of being less expensive to buy and provides more variation in gemstone stocks for jewelry. There are far more of the less costly stones available than the expensive ones. They may not be ideal for investment purposes but they are still all beautiful in their own right.
Diamonds however are rated by how clear they are. The less color, the better the grade of diamond. This doesn't apply of course to a definite colored diamond such as a strong pink or yellow diamonds. These are as highly regarded as a pure clarity near-colorless diamond.
