The Mechanic 2011 Jason Stathem Online Review: Jason Statham Seems Returned In His Original Role On This Movie

Remakes seem very popular these days, and "The Mechanic" is now on the list. This 2011 film is a remake of the 1972 version, which starred Charles Bronson. It is a film about a contract killer, and the question is: is this movie a go-see or will it need fixing? Let's find out!

Main Characters

The celebrity of this movie is Arthur Bishop, that is performed by actor Jason Statham. Bishop is a killer-for-hire, as well as he is very, very good. His uniqueness is making his hits seem to be everyday incidents - accidents or natural causes being top of the list. And when the movie opens, we see his first contract killing - a wealthy man playing in his private pool, with armed guards present. Yes, Bishop pulls it off, and returns to safety.

One of Bishop's dearest friends is Harry McKenna, performed by Donald Sutherland. So naturally Bishop is aghast when he realizes his next contract is Harry! It seems that there was a mission in South Africa that went bad but only 2 people knew about this (Harry being one, and Bishop's boss being the other). Harry got money as a trade for the deal details, so it is his turn to die.

Bishop is not happy about this, but he does the contract and kills Harry, which makes it look like a carjacking gone bad. In the meantime, Harry's son, Steve McKenna (played by Ben Foster) is enraged over his father's murder and hopes to find and kill a carjacker as payback.

And the Plot of The Mechanic Thickens...

Steve does go searching for a carjacker and finds one, but before Steve can kill the guy, Bishop intervenes. However, Bishop is intrigued by what Steve has done and takes him as a protegee of sorts, to teach him what a "mechanic" (assassin) can do.

So, Bishop takes Steve out on an agreement, so he can see for himself what it's like. Bishop strangles his hit, then stages it to seem to be an accidental asphyxiation. And then to prepare Steve further, Bishop explains the planning to takes to pull a hit off to make it appear to be an accident.

As you are imagine, there are yet more contracts for Bishop, and Steve gets much more training along the way (and also being close to getting killed himself throughout a contract). And what occurs in the end is likely to amaze you!

Should You See The Mechanic?

Critics and audiences are about on the same wavelength with this movie; decent enough, but nothing to write home about. Or to put it a different way, it is absolutely worth a matinee price ticket for almost anyone, but worth full price for only people who are into mayhem, or if you loved the actual (because you'll probably like this remake, also).

By all accounts, though, Jason Statham does a creditable job as a "mechanic", the role that Charles Bronson had performed in the 1972 version. Great work, Jason!
