The phrase "global village" is perhaps overused, but not, I think, without valid reason. Technological improvements truly have shrunk the globe, and it is certainly not uncommon to locate citizens of one country living and working in another, often literally on the other side of the globe, far away from the comforts of the familiar...no Cadbury's or Earl Grey to be discovered for hundreds of miles!
Transportation is faster and easier, and as the years and technologies have progressed, the entire concept of "borders" has gradually become more a comfort than a hindrance to trade, or to people today physically moving around the globe pursuing economic or various other hobbies. These days, the notion of a "global citizen" is becoming a lot more mainstream, and if the permanent trend continues, then the whole concept of the "nation" could become an useless construct.
Granted, that day is likely still awhile off, but even now, one may see how such a thing could occur. We truly are becoming a global village, and while that may make several people uneasy (and utterly terrify just a few others), overall, my sense of it is that this is a good thing.
One thing remains a fact however. No matter who you are, or where you're from, or how long you've been away, sooner or later, nearly everybody finds themselves longing for a taste of home. You might had a favorite blend of tea you enjoyed when you lived in your home country (Earl Grey, anyone?). Or a favorite brand of munchies that your new home actually doesn't carry (or even know that it exists). Nostalgia could be a powerful force, and when it hits, it's great to know that technology can help you in satisfying those urges.
