Originally from the coastal areas of Mexico the Yellow headed Amazon parrots are becoming popular house animals partly due to their beautiful markings. These birds are predominantly green with an attractive yellow head and a red patch on every wing. They can even be located south of Mexico in Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. Though they opt for habitats such as tropical or subtropical forests, savannahs, mangrove swamps, or cultivated land where trees are available for nesting, Yellow headed Amazon parrots are now considered uncommon and on the endangered list due to poaching and unlawful trade and also due to deforestation causing the loss of their nesting environment.
Captive bred Yellow headed Amazons are widely available as pets but can be relatively costly. They are a very well-known parrot species to possess due to their vocal capabilities. They are a close second to the African Grey parrot that is considered the best talker in the parrot community. Even though all Amazons are competent at talking not all do. Their talking capability differs with every parrot. A few birds are excellent talkers while other may never talk. Yellow headed Amazon parrots are quite sharp, humorous, and lively birds. They love to get attention and do so by being loud and playful. They are considered to be the loudest of all the Amazon parrots. But, it is possible to replace screeching with human speech with some training. Since Yellow headed Amazon parrots are lively they prosper in an environment which allows them to fly and move around. An aviary is a good housing but they can also adjust to indoor crates as long as adequate daily exercise is offered by their keeper. These parrots can also be easily tamed and taught. However, like many large parrot species, Yellow headed Amazons can be destructive. Keepers must give their parrots lots of chewing products and braches.
These parrots could grow to the average length of fifteen inches though females are a bit smaller than males. Yellow headed Amazon parrots have a stout, hooked beak that is not only used for breaking the hard shells of seeds and nuts but also for clasping, exploring, and climbing. They also use their toes to climb and it is practically like another hand for them. Amazons have two toes directed forwards and two toes directed backwards that make them perfect for grasping. They will use their paws to hold food while eating.
In the wild Yellow headed Amazons eat many different fruits, cherries, nuts, flowers, and leaf buds. They are also known to raid agricultural crops like maize. When residing in a home environment with an owner these parrots enjoy vegetables, fruit, seeds, nuts, cherries, and pellet food. Like all parrots nourishment is vital for their health and their lives.
When thinking of possessing one of these lovely birds as a pet, owners ought to consider the longevity of their commitment. Yellow headed Amazon parrots may survive to get sixty to eighty years of age. Even though no pet is perfect, these parrots are certain to give their owners hours of entertainment and pleasure.
